One of the best in this price range

I recieved this item for testing purposes. When it arrived it was packaged very well and I was impressed with the quality for the money. After seeing the length of the cords specfically on the rear channel speakers I realized that I would have to use this in my room. The length of the rear/side channel speakers are not long enough for larger family rooms. The speakers were very easy to hook up and anyone could set them up with or without instructions. The aux setup is what you will mainly use for mp3 players. I tried to use the usb with my Iphone 5 it did not work so I assume the same with older I phones and other Smartphone devices. The touch screen is cool but I prefer using the remote and the switchability from 2.1 to 5.1 can also be useful depending on what you are doing or if you just want to movie it into an office temporarily.

Now on to the quality of the sound. The speakers for surround sound purposes during movies are where they really shine. I played movies ranging from Batman Begins, Lawless and Rocky Balboa. On every movie the clarity was on point and the speakers out preforms quality of sound at higher volumes than that of more expensive units. It is comparable to the 1000w Sony bravia system with just a smaller center channel. The bass response is very satisfying in smaller rooms for surround sound purposes. The mids and highs are very clear and the mids do not get muddy sounding on movies untill near full volume.

For music purposes these speakers will not blow you away but they will impress you for what you are getting. Classical, Rock and Roll and a lot of electronic music was very nice to listen to on these. The highs on female vocals and other sounds such as the flute where very clear to near full volume. The bass response on music was more pound then boom. If you plan on only listening to rap music then you may not fully enjoy the bass response. It is more designed around surround sound purposes and less for shaking the walls. The settings for boosting the sound in the speakers again is something that really only needs to be used for surround sound. On music I would not go more than +4 on the bass if you play it in the 50+ volume range.

Overall I am impressed with it for the price and would highly recommend this to anyone lookings for a good surround sound setup for a smaller room or apartment living room.

Great Value

The VM Audio EXMS590T has wonderful sound, especially for it's price bracket. The audio clarity and accuracy I experienced was on par with many surround and audio output devices I own that are twice the cost, if not more.

The remote offers full and intuitive control over the system, allowing you to not only control volume and input, but also individual groups of speakers to quickly adjust the sound to your liking.

The only drawbacks I found from this system is the lack of an optical audio input, non full-function iPod support, forced 2.1ch when not utilizing all 5 channels in, and a forced high volume turn on. The optical audio in is self explanatory, if you own a newer television that doesn't have RCA out, you are forced to utilize a digital to analog converter. The iPod support is understandable with the cost of this machine, typically that functionality is only supported on more expensive, or dedicated iPod sound systems. I really feel the volume (which is defaulted to turn on at roughly 3/4 maximum output) is counter intuitive. I am finding myself turning the volume down almost every time I use the system before actually allowing audio input, especially in instances when children are asleep or someone in the house is on the phone/etc.

My largest beef with the system is the forced 2.1ch mode. When using USB, or even 2.1 in for that matter, I feel that the surround speakers should be able to duplicate the front channel speakers, essentially making it a surround 2.1ch stereo. There is no way of getting output from the surround satellites unless there are 4 RCA inputs present. A workaround for this is to use Y-splitters on the input, but it's never a good policy to encourage more peripherals purchasing on a "budget" system.

With those small drawbacks, I can safely say that the VM Audio surround system is a great value product for the money. It fills the room with non-colored, rich sound that rivals surround systems and docks well outside of its price range. Being an audio enthusiast, I was rather impressed with the actual speaker quality considering the obvious focus on frugality with the system. If taken care of, I can see the EXMS590T being a long term, quality budget surround system for anyone wanting to get true surround without the pricetag of many competitors. One would be hard pressed to find a comparable surround system for the money.

I for one, will definitely continue to seek out VM Audio products by the impression this unit has made on me.
