Ryobi RY34420 String Trimmer:
Purchased about 6 weeks ago. Used a few times and will no longer start. The spark plug is bone dry after priming the daylights out of it and attempting to start. Was concerned about the quality of this weed eater form the day it arrived. Trashy construction!
I had bad luck with this unit- it would not start easily- i brought it in under warranty and it was "repaired". I could not get the unit to start properly. They had issues with the unit and basically replaced everything "under the hood" Found out that the fly wheel on the starting cord had an issue. three weeks to get the part on back order. Now 2 months after I purchased the unit- i have a machine that seems to work better- it does shoot out the "string" at times which means start all over again with the project . scale of 1-10 buying experience maybe 1. Units now that it is repaired 6.
This unit was purchased to replace my older 2cycle Ryobi. The 4 cycle engine is terrific, no mixing gas and oil! Easy to set up and start right out of the box. Works great with Craftsman and Poulan attachements.
Home use, liked the 4 cycle, read below
Not happy, it sounded like a good deal. The old saying you get what you pay for. I couldn't even use it I had to take it to a authorized repair dealer and they will have it for a week before I get it back.
After reading the reviews, I was on the fence about buying this triimmer. I went ahead and got the trimmer and discovered
that it works well and easy to start. The trimmer was reconditioned and was about $150 cheaper than the same trimmer new.
There is an issue with the amount of oil to put in the crankcase, if it smokes you undoubtable have put to much oil in, so,
simply remove some and all is good. Unlike a 2 cycle, you cannot turn this trimmer on its side to trim, so simply adjust the
trimmer extension which has a ball bearing button to swivel the trimmer head at 90% to cut in that direction. If you dont do that the trimmer will begin to smoke heavily. Like a car engine, if you put it at 90% it to will smoke and soon overheat and stop.
The advantage to a 4 cycle trimmer is of course no mixing oil and gas. This trimmer has lots of power and will zoom through
weeds and grass with little effort. There are other 4 cycles, perhaps a Sears product may be designed better and if you
can spare a few extra bucks should head in that direction, if your someone who hates temperamental equipment.
worked ok for 2 yrs. for the price i expected it to last longer. during the time it did work, it always leaked oil all over my clothes and after using it i smelled like oil and gas. the unit gets very hot and during use your arm will hit it and you will get burned. it was easy to reload with trimmer line, and the bump feed worked good but the debris shroud is much too small and you will wind up covered from head to toe in clippings, you will be pelted with pebbles as well. it started relatively easy but constantly needed carb adjustments of which you need a special tool to accomplish. i am sorry i bought this unit and while part of me wishes it lasted longer, the other part of me is greatful it finally died.
no muss no fuss gas and go after you put the crank case oil in!
easy to balance and use and quickly change strings, pull out old,
slide in new pre cut to length and go, that simple!
Good product for the price, works well, just difficult to start up...
it leaks oil stop it and its great iwould recomend it
this is a great trimmer and it is priced right. VMinnovations was very quick to respond to my initial concern. I would buy from them again.
I had one of these trimmers for 2 years and I used it mainly with the pole saw attachment . For the most part it gave dependable service. It's very tempermental when it first starts and you need to let it warm up. As soon as I throttle it up it runs fine after that. I used this with the Ryobi pole saw and I cut thru 6-8 inch diameter logs and it does cut good with sharpened chains. I shy away from regular chain saws for safety reasons. My unit started sputtering and I adjusted the idle /carberater screw and it worked good again. Use Stabil fuel additive for the fuel when you store this trimmer for extended periods otherwise it will gum the carb and store the trimmer level and not straight up and down because it will damage the trimmer if you store it in a vertical position. I'd still have this trimmer but I failed to check the oil and it died. Now I check the oil each time I use it and even while I'm using it. Thanks to this company I can get cheap equipment because I really use my equipment hard maintaining 11 acres of land. The trimmers I get always seem new but they don't give you a can of oil. The only negative is the adding of oil. Very confusing to get the right amount of oil. I read 2.2 ounces will fill it . So be careful not to overfill.
My father has a 2 cycle Troy built trimmer and he bought it new , It had the same sluggish starts the Ryobi has.
I receieved my trimmer from VM Innovations (September 2014) and was pleased to see that the camshaft is now metal and it featured a walbro carb. It fired up on the third pull. Idle is quiet, full throttle is quite loud.
Unfortunately it did not include oil and it is difficult to tell when full. The manual says 10w30 and the oil cap says 20w50. I purposely overfilled until the oil ran out the fill hole and then poured it off until the oil was at the bottom of the threaded opening. It came out perfect on the dipstick.
The new name brand carb seems good and includes a "filter" (foam). The only problem it it appears to be completely non-adjustable. There are no adjustment screws on it at all. The old carbs had the proprietary screws you could adjust with a special tool or after cutting a slot in it with a dremel, but the walbro has nothing externally.
Not enough use to recommend for or against, but if the only thing holding you back was the plastic cam and junk carb, then you may be pleasantly surprised.
I bought mine two years ago and it still runs and operates perfectly. It MUST be stored flat, not hanging up. I am on my second season and I am very pleased with both operation and ease of use. Great deal !! And as a bonus it uses all my atachments. Take care of it and follow the instructions is all that's needed here!!!
easy to use and make sure to follow direction when operating it. otherwise, you'll end up damiaging the product.
GREAT RODUCT HAD MINOR OUT OF BOX WITH THE CARB NEEDING ADJUSTMENT. I CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY SAID BRING YOUR RECEIPT TO YOUR LOCAL AUTHORIZED RYOBI REPAIR CENTER AND I GOT IT BACK VERY NEXT DAY FREE OF CHARGE AND NO ISSUES. IT HAS BEEN WORKING LIKE A CHAMP EVER SINCE. I BOUGHT ALL THE ATTACHMENTS AND MY YARD LOOKS GREAT!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!1
I have not tried it yet. the shipping was fast and the price was ggreat.
Aside from the punctured fuel line which I fixed in a few minutes just by cutting the end off and putting it back on, seems pretty good so far.
It starts pretty easy and runs good. Has lots of power. It seems like the carb could stand a tweak, or the valve lash..? Dunno. It starts and runs predictably so far and has a good size fuel tank.
I can see how oil leaks could be an issue. It has a plastic square reservoir that is bolted to the crankcase with a gasket about 1 1/2" x 2" or so...maybe tighten up those four scews each season...? We'll see, I guess. It also has a timing belt for the camshaft, but looks simple enough to replace. I wouldn't be surprised to see the belt last 3 to 5 years or more...We'll see about that as well, I guess.
4 cycle trimmers are new, and new to me, but so far I like it.
The angle of the trimmer head makes it somewhat uncomfortable to use in some situations, but aren't they all.
I'm kind of holding my breathe on the durability factor, but I was never that impressed with the old 2 stroke trimmers anyway.
For the price, I'm game.
VMI had great shipping and communication. I'll buy from these guys anyday. This was my 2nd purchase and am very happy with their service.
