The VM Audio Elux Series 12" competition subwoofer was designed for those with a passion for pure and unmuddled low frequencies. We know you're going to push your audio equipment to its maximum potential and our expert audio engineering team designed our Elux series subwoofers to keep up.
Whether you're looking to turn some heads around town or if you're an audiophile yourself and want to get the kind of crystal clear bass that you need to enjoy your music to the fullest, the VM Audio Elux series 12" competition subwoofer is the pinnacle of bass performance, intelligent design and precision engineering.
TOP-TIER BASS RESPONSIVENESS You need a subwoofer that can meet the demands of your favorite music. The Elux series 12" subwoofer uses a high-excursion mechanical suspension system, a large poly-cotton spider and light-weight IMPP cone to provide you with the clear, responsive bass that you need.
BUILT FOR THE LONG-HAUL You should be able to blast your music with the windows down or with the top back without having to worry about your speakers being affected by the weather. Our Elux series 12" subwoofer is built with a durable rubber surround, custom stamped steel basket and nickel-plated wire connections so that the unit will resist dust, moisture and rust.
ADVANCED THERMAL MANAGEMENT
When you're pushing 2400 watts to your sub, things can heat up. That's why the VM Audio Elux series 12" sub features an extended thermal cooling vented pole piece motor structure for direct air exposure and an aerodynamic direct voice coil surface-cooling system with high surface area for fast cooling.
INSTALLATION FLEXIBILITY Whether you fall on the sealed or ported side of the subwoofer enclosure debate, the VM Audio Elux series 12" subwoofer can do either. With both dual and single impedance configurations, the EXW12 can do it all.

I was sent one of these to write a review, and after playing with it for a week here are my impressions:
I also own a pair of the lower quality VM Audio subs to compare. These have a larger surround than I was expecting. However it seems to be rubber just like the lower quality ones, so in freezing temperatures these will more than likely freeze (reminds me to update those reviews). With the large surround and loose spider, the sub has quite a bit of excursion. I swapped it with a Type R I had and it seemed to handle my 1k rms @ 2 ohms worst than the R, but I only tried ~1.3 cuft sealed. I was suprised how well they did sound, plenty of punch and have a pretty flat response.
The magnet does look like it's in a boot, and I would rate this sub closer to 800 than the current rating. They also upgraded to a harder metal basket which was a big con of the lower model. However I noticed for the removable plastic ring around the surround isn't mounted, and the drywall screws I used had to bore the hole some to actually fit.
Overall, It's a decent quality subwoofer. If this is the max in your budget and have the power to make it useful, do so. And if you live in a cold climate, I'd look for ones with a foam surround.
well first off let me say i received this sub to test. on arrival package was well secured with double boxing and plenty of protection for the sub. i will say the basket design could be alittle better but is alot stronger than their low end vr subs which i have tested as well. I love the big surround on sub as well as the push connect post. one thing that could be improved on from the post side is the subwoofer leads...they seem alittle small imo. now as far as performance, this sub has great punch. i have it paired up with a mb quart onx1.1600d amp wired at 2 ohms(1100w rms) and the sub loves the rating. i would say about 700-800w rms all day for this budget of a sub. pair this sub up with another and you have yourself a great budget bass setup that will perform with a punch. i tried the sub out with different types of music and will say it didnt really like the higher fq of bass...it picked up the low ends pretty well. the box i have is tuned around 32-33hz and like i said has great deep punch. in the end if you are on a budget and looking to run a pair of subs that will delievery imo clean deep bass for the price, you cant go wrong with the elux series. VmI is stepping up with each sub they release.
This is the second driver VM Audio has been kind enough to let me audition. The sub arrived in great shape. Essentially triple boxed however the inner carton had been damaged in transit. The sub ripped right through the cardboard cut out ring but arrived in perfect shape none the less. I liked the looks of the sub right away from the front. I do not however care for the plastic beauty/trim ring. It looks good but I would rather see a standard gasket here. Mounting screws are included with the sub and you pretty much have to use them as most other screws you might use for mounting the driver would not fit into the plastic trim ring. The basket is much sturdier on this model than the previous model I tested for VM Audio but the design of it is a bit awkward and the edges are sharp. Makes it a little more difficult to handle the sub and find a good place to grasp it without cutting yourself. It will reside in the enclosure though so once its mounted this is of no real concern to me. The sub comes equipped with two sets of push terminals which handle 12 gauge wire easily. Motor is of decent size and covered in plastic which I don't care for ( show the motor off!) Enough about looks though, how does this thing perform????????............. Pretty good considering the price point. I listened to the sub in a 1.75 cu ft enclosure tuned to 35 hz with a 4 inch aero port. I listened to a lot of rap,r&b,dubstep, rock, and pop tracks and it did a fairly good job of keeping up with all of them. I was very pleasantly surprised by the output of the sub. Its not real meaty in the 30-40 hz region but the output was definitely there and clean. Its just no low end monster. The power rating on this driver is a bit optimistic but it did seem to handle 600-700 watts with relative ease. Definitely enough power to get all you are going to get from this driver. I have spent twice what these subs sell for on other drivers and been disappointed so its nice to see a driver in the budget category with some good all around bass and unexpected output. Great driver for anybody just starting out or somebody who is on the tightest of budgets. Overall I am happy with this sub.
this sub for the money cant be beat.... i've ran it both ported and sealed.... sub performed nicely crytsal clear sound... sub likes around 800w and favors upper 30's to low forties hertz.... I've ran alot alot of subs and this sub hangs with some subs from double its price range... I would recommend these subs for anyone trying to put solid bass in their car.... I see alot of multiple sub builds with these...
I ran this sub sealed and ported, on a 500w and on a thousand watt jl v2.... I first ran ported on the jl 500.... nice solid bass!!! would compare to some subs that are double in price... it wanted more.... so I ran the jl 1000... it loved it... would say this sub feels most comfortable at around 800-850w range 38hz and up... it dont like the lower notes too well... but it gets loud!!! I would recommend and at this price point I can see a nice budget build with multiple subs in my future!!!! awesome sub for the price!!! (in the sealed it was solid and clean!!! but more output with the ported..) either way a great sub!!!
I am happy to say that this sub does not disappoint. While the price may turn some people off and make them think it is a cheap sub, I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality. If I were to compare it to anything it wouldn't be that far off in stature to a Rockford Fosgate HX2.

Test scenario: 12" ported enclosure tuned to 33hz with 1.5 cu ft of air space + port area. Very impressive output. I let the sub run on a few different songs from classical to rap, and it performed well with all types of music. It was a little boomy but I attribute that to the enclosure more so than the sub itself. Overall it stayed with the music pretty well and it sounded good doing it. I am pleased and would consider purchasing a 15" version after testing this sub.

The one thing that I would say VMI needs to do some more R&D on is the packaging of the sub, while it arrived to be in good shape, the plastic cover over the magnet was cracked due to the inadequate packaging used. This sub is simply far too heavy to be shipped in the container it was shipped in. I have spoken to VMI about it and they are researching so it is quite reasonable to say that this will be remedied soon.

This sub was provided to me free of charge by VMinnovations for review purposes.
