Refurbished RYOBI RY34440 4-Cycle Gas Weed Trimmer:
I bought this trimmer a few days ago after seeing it in home depot. home depot = $200. vminnovations = $75 with coupon code. Yes its referbuished but that doesnt matter to me. i received it yesterday, opened it up, and assembled it in no time at all. It was is great condition for being referbuished too. I filled it up with ryobi 4 stroke oil that I bought from home depot and then some gas. I primed it a few times and it started right up. I didn't even have to choke it. I have read a lot of reviews on this product and majority are negative. Number one complaint is that it leaks oil. well remember it is a 4 stroke. It has a crankcase. If it is stored upright it will leak. Lay it flat!!! It has unbelievable power. I have an edger attachment for it also and it works great with it. The edger works a lot better with the 4 stroke. My 2 stroke ryobi would get bogged down when edging sometimes.
I bought one of these and it would not start after Winter storage. AFTER I wrote to Vimonations about it I discovered that I had hung it up wrong way and oil had got into the cylinder. Cleaned out oil in cylinder last year and STILL a great little machine.
Bought refurbishes, works great - just store it level (horizontal) so the oil doesn't leak and then it will run fine.
I was nervous after reading all the reviews. Some loved it and others did not. After looking at prices, I felt this was worth taking a chance on. Ordered and shipped with no issues. Everything was there with exception of the oil and funnel that comes with it when you buy it new. Was not an issue. Used my own funnel and oil. Put fresh gas and took it outside to fire it up. Primed, put it on start and pulled on the cord a few times. It wouldn't fire up. So I depressed the throttle and then placed the choke back on start (hitting the throttle hits choke on run setting). Pulled the cord and she fired right up. Hit the throttle after 10 seconds and she ran like a champ. I took it out and did the whole yard. Ran fine and had no issues. I have only used 2 cycle trimmers before this. The 4 cycle is powerful and has a nice deep sound. This is heavier than a 2 cycle so if you going to use it for an extended peroid of time, be aware of that. This is also a straight shaft trimmer vs curved. I am used to a curve shaft going clockwise. It's not a big deal, but there was a small learning curve to using this and not getting hit with all the clippings. I waited to use it additional times before writting this review. It continues to fire right up and run with no issues.
Great product, easy transaction, quick order processing and fast delivery. Vendor super-recommended!
The first Ryobi that I purchased from VMI had to be returned. VMI did a exceptional job in helping me return and resend another unit. Unfortunately the second unit leaks gas from the fuel tank which I reparied. Ryobi is the worst company to deal with, never returned any of the responses I emailed them looking for assistance. Their refurbisment quality is absolutely horrible and the instructions are even worse. I will never buy anyproduct from them,,,ever.
goes together very easy and started right up .has good power but after 10 minutes of use it died and will only run at idle .
these units have a very serious problem with carburetor .
save yourself alot of aggravation and buy a better brand weed eater .
i have learned my lesson
So the trimmer arrives FedEx this is a plus. I get the unit open and add oil. Starts right up and has a low low purr. Run for about 5-10 minutes and it starts to sputter. Turn the unit off and there is oil coming from somewhere under the bright green cover. I checked the oil level it was fine. Taken the green cover off to see were the oil is coming from, I have no clue. Washed it dowm and tried it again. I got the same results. Its refurbished what do you expect. I will be returning for a refund or a exchange.
Started second pull, ran great, lots of power... spent too much time determing ho wmuch oil to put in the crankcase. There should be a card included that tell you "add xxx onces of xxxx oil to crakcase before starting"
I was looking for a new trimmer, my old Ryobi trimmer died. Being the tightwad that I am I started looking for something else cheap. My old Ryobi was a refurb also and it was a cheap price. I found this sight by looking at their items on eBay. I figured that for the money I would give it a try. After filling the crankcase with oil and putting gas in the tank, the trimmer started right up. It has plenty of power and is much quieter than my old one. There are some smudges and scuffs on the plastic, you can tell it is not new, but for the price who cares? It was delivered promptly by FeEx also.
This trimmer was delivered about 4-5 days after I ordered it. My wife was happy about that, because our yard needed trimming very bad. When the box was delivered, it was fairly beat up and partially opened. However, once I opened it, I found all parts and the trimmer in as close to perfect condition as a reconditioned trimmer could be. Very hard to tell from a new one, especially after I used it once. I put oil in it, then gas in it and it cranked right up, first try. This trimmer is a little on the heavy side, and isn't the most well balanced machine, but for the price, it's a fantastic deal.
One thing. I've had curved shaft trimmers for years and this is my first straight shaft. The cutting head spins the opposite direction on a straight shaft, so if you're used to trimming in to the left to avoid crap hitting your legs, you'll have to learn how to cut to the right. Sounds really simple, but it's difficult to get used to after 20 years of using a curved shaft. haha
The order shipped very fast. As seen in the review, after adjusting the idle speed, I can start it without problem. I use it for lawn edge trimming. I still need a little more practice since it is different than the wireless trimmer I used before. I'm satisfied with this purchase.
This unit arrived in what I would call typical refurbished condition, some scuffs and very minor wear. It appears they shipped it with a new handle and guard in a seperate bag as they look untouched. The oil is not included, I used 10W30 small engine oil I poured in using a small funnel little by little until the dipstick read full. (Laying machine flat, and not screwing in the dipstick per the manual) I filled its tank and primed it 10 times, using full choke after 3 pulls it tried to start. I set it to half choke and pulled it 2 more times (NOT touching the throttle) and it started and I let it idle on its own for about 30 secs and then opened the choke all the way. First thing that impressed me was the power, it has more torque than a typical 2-stroke at lower RPMS and as such I didnt need to rev it out to cut the typical tall grass around my house. I found the vibration to not be excessive and the noise to be typical of any string trimmer I've used. I did try to run the machine in a near vertical position and it soon sputtered and puffed out some smoke and stalled. This appears to be the weakness of this unit, and probably why the manual states to store it horizontally and not hung on a wall. 2 pulls later and it started up fine. As long as the machine is not run or stored in a vertical position it should run well as I have no problems yet!
Gets a little hot when you run it for a while. I ended up with a burn on my forearm from touched the top of the housing. Overall it is a really good deal for the price. I've used it one day. It has plenty of power and is ver consistent starting. I would buy this again if it last a year.
Great trimmer, unfortunately I received one missing the airfilter, and would not run after warm-up. The customer support has been very helpful and is continuing to resolve the matter.
i have used it for the first time and it worked ok. i used it to cut grass in my home yard. let me see how it works two or three times more...expect it to work ok
People are leaving neg. reviews for this trimmer and I don't know why. Worked great for me! It tackled the 6 ft. grass in our ditch by the road with no problem. No leaks, no problems.
Customer service with vminnovations is great but I ordered two of these guys and they both leaked oil near the choke and poured down all over gas reservoir. I don't know if I just got two bad apples. I did get the second one to run for about 10 min and while it ran it worked very well. Its too bad because this seemed like a good trimmer.
I'm glad I found a company that sells these trimmers cheap and who'll stand by their product if anything goes wrong. They replaced my trimmer because it was having trouble starting. Very nice about it too.
I've had 3 of these trimmers , the first one died because it had no oil, stupid me. That lasted for 2 long years doing very brutal work clearing acres and acres of land. Thank God for gas trimmers, I don't know how they managed in the old days.
I love these Ryobi trimmers, very inexpensive compared to the stores and they are for the most part reliable. I always have a second one for backup because gas trimmers are very tempermental. I used mid grade gas and added stabil fuel treatment to my recent trimmer and it worked great the first time. No complaints.
I wish this company sold lawnmowers at these low prices, but lawnmowers are much more reliable then these gas trimmers and people don't return them as often.
Looks and works great. Huge difference in power compared to my old 2 cycle trimmer. The package arrived in 3 days. Was missing oil, but a trip to Home Depot and $2 later everything was in order.
Fast shipping. A little heavy, but thats OK since it well made. Have to keep it on full choke a little longer than my old Ryobi as it takes more time to get up to temp. Very satisified.
Easy to start cold. Not so much hot, after about 45 minutes, won't start starts losing power. Starts and runs OK after it's cooled off...maybe a tuning issue...?
The unit has a plastic oil sump with a gasket and about 4 or so screws. I tightened these up after initial use and the begging of each season to avoid the oils leaks. It takes about 15-20 minutes with the oil change. I also check the rocker arm cover, one screw if I recall.
I found a small glass measuring cup that is marked in 10 ml and .5 oz increments, at Meijer in the kitchen department, which makes oil changes dead on, since this machine uses so little. just measure out of a quart bottle.
The unit has plenty of torque, low on vibration and by far my favorite whippper so far. I just need to figure out my hot run problem.
Purchased the Ryobi RY34440 on April 24 and received first thing this mornig April 26. I live in the Greater Columbus Ohio area. I was pleased how fast my order was processed, shipped and received.
Trimmer was easy to put together and mine looked like new. The curved grass shaft deflector was brand new and in a sealed bag you opened. The REAL EASY STRING HEAD was in brand new retail packaging.
The only problem I had with assembly was the winged screw to secure the front handle broke. The directions tell you hand tighten only, which is what I did, but it broke. I have pictures to show what I mean, but I see no pictures can be included. Anyway, for 97 cents I got a replacement at the local hardware store.
The only other discrepancy I found was the manual says to use 10W-30 oil, but a sticker on the motor near the oil fill point says to use 20W-50. I went with the sticker on the engine. The paperwork in the shipping box suggests the oil was included, but it was not so I purchased 20W-50. I have a picture of the sticker and the manual, but once again, no pictures allowed.
The trimline head was easy to attach and fill with 25 fts of .95 mil trim line (included).
I used for about 25 minutes and then put away.
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS PRINTED EVERYWHERE.... STORE HORIZONTALLY.
Happy for the service I received from VMINNOVATIONS. Time will tell if I am completely satisfied with the actual product, but I was tired of mixing oil/gas and wanted a 4-stroke to replace a broken trimmer.
This trimmer was easy to assemble and it started up without any problems, it is like new (in looks and preformance) it does every thing i expected it to do!
the only draw back if this is one is you have to store it laying flat. (no real problem)
ran for 10 minutes good , but when it warms up it quits and will not run over a idle .
the ratings here look good , go to home depots reviews and the trurth gets told .
the company will fix it but the only royobi deller is 2 hours away from me .
so i would not recommended this weed eater to anybody .
I live on hilly acreage and find that it is easy to use because of weight and balance.
After years of good service the first one needed replacement.
I would have given this 5 stars, but it's my first trimmer and i'm not familiar with what to look for. Also, the funnel for adding oil was not provided with the package (probably since it was refurbished).
After reading all the negative reviews on Amazon, I figured I would give it a shot since it was only $88. Being that it's refurbished i trusted the quality more since it was fixed and tested. Setup was easy and there were some small scratches from previous usage, but nothing major. Starting it as directed by the instrucions worked perfectly and there were no issues with cold and warm starts. I even let it cool down for 2 hours and started it with no issues. Every time it fired up on the first pull with half choke.
Construction looks solid. Some people complained about many engine parts being plastic and therefore breaking easily. I am very familiar with 2 and 4 stroke engines and did not see major issues with the plastic parts. Yes, they could have been metal, but then the cost of the product would have gone up. It's acceptable the way it is.
Oil leakage - Did not see any and have been storing it horizontally. Chances are there will be some very minor leakage/splatter with usage, but that's to be expected.
Noise and vibration - Again, it's it's my first trimmer I can not compare these 2 aspects with anything. At idle it's not loud and with full throttle it's not to the level that you will need ear plugs. The vibrations are fine for home use, but will probably get annoying if you're in the landscaping business and happen to use it straight for an hour. Then again, that would probably be the case with any trimmer.
Weight and balance - Seems ok to me!
Over all, love the 4 cycle engine. Would recommend this product and am very happy with my purchase.
price is great no marks on it as a refurbished piece. Starts great usually 2nd full. No smoke unless you tip it. Has plenty of power. Idles great!!!
All in All is great!!!!
<span>Great trimmer for the price, but I would never pay the 199 most places want for one. Things to note, the engine spins the opposite of what you're used to. So when you stand on the left side of the trimmer, it throws grass and weeds at you instead of away from you. This makes edging/trimming awkward and painful. Stand on the right side of the trimmer when using it to prevent it from happening. The handle also seems a little too thick. It might be because my left hand isn't used to holding a trimmer like this, I don't know. Just something else to note. </span>
<span>Another thing, it's "different" to start. This is my first four stroke and it seems like they have a lot more compression than the two strokes of the past. Kind of makes starting different, not hard, just different. It also is not as easy as my two strokes to start after the engine is already warm. </span>
<span>The final thing to note is the oil. The trimmer itself said use "20w50" and the manual said "10w30" so I said..."5w30" because I had it. Nowhere on the internet can I find how much oil to use, Ryobi should say "add X ounces of oil to the crankcase" no idea why they didn't. Also, this is a four stroke engine. Treat it like one. If you want to edge with the trimmer upside down over your head, get a 2 stroke. </span>
Like everyone knows you have to lay it flat or it leaks , but all trimmers leak a little oil. I like it so much i bought anothrer one for my other property. It went together in minutes a little oil and gas primmed 6xs cranked right up and has awesome power more than my old 2 stroke. I would recommend this to anyone
I didn't know what to expect with an unseen refurbished item. When it showed up, it was packaged nicely and looked new. It says it comes with the 4 cycle oil, but it wasn't included. No problem, I just went to Home Depot and bought a bottle. Went home poured the oil in and filled the tank with gas (so much easier than mixing for 2 stroke) and it fired right up and sounds good. I immediatley went to work on the backyard and it works great. It's light weight and not bulky. Make sure that you store it horizantally, do not hang vertically. You can't beat the price. When I went to Home Depot to get the oil, I saw the same machine for about $200.
