Poulan Pro PP4218A is an 18", gas-powered chainsaw that's ideal for homeowners looking for durable performance at a great value.
Poulan PP4218AVX is a equipped with a 18" steel bar and powered by a 42cc, 2-cycle gas engine. This lightweight chainsaw starts in seconds and has enough power to aggressively cut through any wood without staggering. This Poulan.
This Poulan Pro OO4218A chainsaw is guaranteed to work as well as a brand new product. All original accessories (manual, oil) along with a brand new chain are included.
Had to adjust the carburetor for altitude because it kept stalling (reguires a special tool, $8 on ebay). Now, runs like a champ. I've cut 3-4 cords of wood at about 8,000 feet with no trouble at all. This saw sells for about $150 plus tax at Wally World, so this is a great deal!
There's a lot of bad reviews online about this style chainsaw mainly because of the chain tensioner. I used it for the first time last month clearing out some new food plots and a large trail through the woods. Most of what I was cutting down was up to ten inches in diameter so nothing huge. It cuts good, but that can be expected with the brand new chain it comes with. The chain tensioner is pretty simple with a little wheel you turn down to tighten the chain. It didn't come loose like a lot of people were saying. Any chain will eventually come loose on a chainsaw whichever style tensioner it has. Just check the tension after every couple of trees, and adjust if you need to. I don't understand all the people who expect a saw to keep tension all day long, it's not gonna happen. I adjusted the tension once in one day of cutting, that's common with any saw. The only flaw the saw had was that it needs the carburator adjusted and you can't do it without a special tool. So I will have to buy that tool in the future, eventually you have to adjust the carb on any small engine. Worked great for me no major complaints except needing a special tool to adjust the carb, so four stars. Husqvarnas are nice but all it takes is care and maintenance of any saw and it will run fine, you can't beat the crap out of any saw and expect to perform even stihls.
Would never buy one again. Cheap plastic, and won't stay running. I will have to try to fix it to sell it. Stalls constantly. Avoid
Looks BRAND NEW out of box, except for smell of old stale gas in tank and a stained up air clener element.
Would not prime or start for about 1/2 hour of tinkering, verifying spark, swapping spark plugs and squirting gas /oil into cylinder. The new gas eventually worked through primer. Cleaned air cleaner element.
Starts right up, runs good, only limbed a bit so far cuts good, we'll see.
Good homeowner grade saw, sells new locally for $169 at the Big Blue store.
This is the first refurbished saw I've bought. I put fuel mix and bar oil in the saw. It started, but had no high speed. It would quite when you pulled the throttle. Ajusted the high speed jet. Didn't seem to have the power it should have (sounded like it was skiping), but went to cut some wood. While cutting wood I noticed it wasn't oiling the chain. I took the bar off and tried to run the engine and monitor for oil output. After a few reves of the engine it wouldn't run at high speed, and when the throttle is pulled, it would back fire through the carb. I removed the flywheel to check the timing and found the molded key damaged. There were no pieces in the key slot. This flywheel should have been replace during re assy. I put the flywheel on in the correct place and thightened the flywheel nut really tight. Tighter than it came off. The saw now runs 100% better, but at this time, still no oil to chain. I removed the chain clutch and inspected the oil pump which is held on with 2 screws. I noted the pump was not centered on the shaft. I removed and inspected the pump. It was dirty, dry and seemed to be misaligned to the drive gear. I cleaned the pump, put greese on the pump shaft to seal it. Ensured the pump gears were on the engine spring style gear. Reassembled the chain clutch and sproket. Started the engine and saw began pumping oil.
The problems I had with this remanafactured saw should not have happened. The Fly wheel should have been replaced. the oil pump tested for output. Quality control is really lacking when a saw goes out the door in this condition.
The price was great (compared to local dealers and other models). Had it out of the box and set up and runnin within 10 min, including mixing the gas. It stated right up without skippin a beat. Took it out back and sliced through a tree without a problem. The quick chain tentioner is a huge time savor
Appeared like new when I opened the box. Thats a good way to start. Speaking of starting, the unit started with little effort. Didn't want to idle when choke was opened. Adjusted low jet so unit would idle correctly. Powered the unit to full power and it ran rough. It would not have been frustrating to try to use. Adjusted high jet so unit could saw at high speed. Now we have the chainsaw we wanted. Would have been better if it had arrived with these adjustments corrected. Now about the bar oiler. It seems like more than enough oil needed. This saw will spit a stream of oil when powered up after running on idle for awhile and leaks oil when setting or stored. Not a big problem for me. Someone on the web suggested to "burb" the unit, meaning to loosen the oil filler cap after use and drain oil and gas before storing. Chain tension adjuster worked fine for me, I may have over thightened after reading all the negative comments. I will not be using this saw a lot, but it is perfect for my needs. Plenty of power for sawing and trimming and starts without a lot of effort. My old saw would wear me out before I would start working. Looking forward to using this saw. Hope this review helps you make your choice.
This price allowed me to get a chainsaw now that will fill my needs of clean up and firewood. This saw is not meant for industrial use which the price rflects. The chain had two teeth that were either bent or manufactured wrong that they hung up in the bar track. After a touch up with a file I was good to go. I have no complaints about VMInnovations and they shipped the order much faster than expected.
I ORDED 2 Poulan Pro PP4218AVX 18-Inch 42cc Gas Chainsaw AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM WOULD RUN I HAD TO BRING BOTH OF THEM TO A PULAN REPAIR SHOP AND HAVE THEM RPAIRED. GOOD THING THAT THEY WERE UNDER WARRENTEE NOW THEY ARE WORKING FINEISH. ????
I have bought 2 of these saws. The first one was damaged and it was replaced through a Poulan dealer. It is still running very well. I bought a second saw this winter season and it has run fine since coming out of the box. I have cut about 20 face cord of so far this winter and both saws are running fine. If you are looking for a heavy duty saw look to Stihl or a couple other brands but be prepared to spend a lot more.
Good Saw, It works, the bar was a bit disappointing, after buying the 14 inch this bar was just painted black. The toolless chain adjust was a bit flimsy for the long bar, would have preferred the standard 2 nut attachment.
The chain is cheap, a skip chain, but long and short, it starts, runs and cuts, for the price what more could you ask for ?
Noticed chain sprocket was dirty.Should have been replaced or at the least, cleaned. It sometimes stalls after finishing a cut. However,it starts quickly after one or two pulls.Uses excessive bar oil but I guess that's ok.But oil isn't cheap anymore. All in all,it seems to perform really well working.I've only done some wood-cutting for about 20 minutes or so.It's a great looking saw and has ease-of-start capability. That's good. I think I'm gonna be satisfied with my purchase. For $98.00 I think I made a wise choice. However, found another link where it's sold for $13.00 less from the same company.Bought it from the SEARS web-site so I guess they had to make a few bucks. There was no charge for shipping, only tax.Arrived via FED-EX in 4 days.
I'm a woman. I needed to cut up a small 8 inch diameter tree. I had never used a chainsaw myself, but I do watch zombie films. This one came from vminnovations in great condition. It looked like new, like it had only been used one time. It was easy to put together and required no additional tools. There are easy to follow pictures on the chainsaw to show you how to get the chain on the bar facing the right direction. It's tensioner knob was easy to use to get the chain just right. It started up for me just like the directions. And I sawed my little tree into wood for a fire pit. The chainsaw was lightweight enough that I handled it without a problem. It was awesome. I'm really proud of myself. If you need a chainsaw for the yard, this is very nice. This will be convenient to carry out into the trees and field to do some quick clearing of fallen limbs. I love it.
It's too soon to say how it will perform in the long term, but in the few weeks I've had this chain saw I've chopped up three large pine trees with ease. Cuts through like butter. To my delight, it starts quickly every time.
tree trimming and cutting. have to top cut with palm trees to keep from plugging up (typical with all chainsaws with such fibrous material). easy to clean.
The saw looked new, started easy and worked great, but, found that the chain oiler wasn't working. Called VM and was told that I could send it back and get a replacement or take it to local repair dealer for which they sent me a list for local dealers and instructions on what to do. I took it and they replaced oil pump which was found defective from manufacturer at no cost and one day service all free. Took it home and cut two trees into small logs all without any other problems. Great saw, easy to adjust and very strong. Would definately buy again. All in all a great deal from VM..Thanks.
Worked A Okay right out of the box.
I have a new similar saw at the repair shop which will cost more to fix than this factory refurbished saw.
But then I will have 2, I called my son in MA and he bought one also. His also worked right out of the box!
VMinovations would not take a credit card over the phone, so I was forced to give my card number over the internet, which I do not like to do !!
After the order was placed,I recieved my saw in two days. Very fast! When I opened the box everything was there and in new condition, no scratches just like new. The saw assembled easley. It also started and run just like new. Perfict !!
I have owned several Poulan Pro Chainsaws, they are a cheap but dependable saw, this saw was the best buy that I have ever had !! I saw about six cords of fire wood for myself plus trim trees and block some fire wood for friends.
I have already recomended this saw to several friends. I am very happy with a very good deal !!!!
Absolutely the worst tool I've ever purchased. Started easily enough out of the box but ran poorly. No amount of tweaking (using a proprietary Poulan tool) could make the thing start up and stay started. Ran hot, stalled repeatedly and could not be restarted. Finally it just quit. I pulled out carb, blew out the lines, changed out fuel, rebuilt the carb (after less than two months use), swapped in new spark plug, and got it running for a few minutes before it died and would not start again. I realize now how much time and effort I've put into this complete piece of junk. I'd give it zero stars if I could.
i realy like the saw it starts in 3 to 5 pulls
the only thing i dont like is the gas cap
i have a hell of a time geting it back on
i have to use a wrench to hitton it than turn it on with the wrench
cant get it on by hand
Been working one hard for a month plus clearing Sandy damage. Needed carb adjusted up front- mainly richer on H. Torch spark plug very questionable (losing ground electrodes, irregular spark)- replaced with (colder) CJ-6 equivalent NGK, BM7A. Started very reliably after that.
OEM chain not so good, lousy in fact, Carlton 30LP, 62 DL chain way better. My saw did NOT have the tool-less adjuster- much to my relief. Engine is "stratified scavenged" (strato), which makes for significantly reduced emissions & fuel consumption.
Overall, 18" bar is a stretch. Gotta keep chain razor-sharp (see Carlton above.) Saw's a couple of pounds heavier than some saws of similar displacement, 14 lbs v. 12, a bigger deal than you might think. Partly due to engine castings in aluminum vice magnesium. You can't always get what you want, not for this price. The anti-vibration mounts are really excellent.
A friend with stihl 250 tried it (with Carlton chain): cuts better, much smoother. Check the price of the stihl. This saw also compares well with my much more expensive (3X) 40 cc RedMax, which turns circles around a 250. Don't expect perfection out of the box- work at it.
Very simple to setup. Used mainly for cutting firewood for home use. Like the way it handles, well balanced. Slow starting is basically the only drawback.
Received this saw as a Christmas gift from my wife to replace my Poulan 16" that had a fuel line issue after five years of hard usage. It arrived on time (so had to wait until this morning to use it), and undamaged in shipping. Set up was quick and easy, just like my old saw. Started up immediately and ran like a champ. I felled and cut up two 14" dia oaks this morning without any difficulty. I am looking forward to years of faithful service from this saw just like my eariler Poulan.
This was a refurbished item--one would have thought the chain saw would have been completly checked out "before being sold". The carborator needs to be adjusted, did not have an air filter and one of the top screws on the cover that houses the carborator is striped.
as others stated buy a carb. adjusting tool to adj. carb. settings. after i adjusted mine, i had no problems. also use 89 octane fuel along with a good 2 cycle engine oil. BE SHURE TO ADD A TOP QUALITY FUEL STABILIZER TO THE FUEL/OIL MIX, THE REASON BEING IS THAT THE ETHENOL IN THE FUEL IS VERY DESTRUCTIVE TO THE CARB. my local small engine repair man also advised to empty the fuel from the gas tank to to the gas can after shutting it down for the day. again ,the ethenol issue.
Very lite saw,and very powerful. One problem with it is if you have to adjust the carb,no specail wrench to do it with. I took a smallplastic hose and slid it over the adjusting srews and tuned it , would like to find the specail screw driver to adjust the specail jet screws
Had to spend another 30 dollars for the bar. The chain comes off a lot during use. It leaks a ton of oil, but I'd rather it leak oil than not have any coming out. Overall good product, get's the job done. It's easy for women to use, but for men it's easy.
Came in great time and was easy to put together. It works just great and easy to use. The only problem I had was learning how to keep the full choke out for the first pulls. After that no problem. Nice weight and plenty of power for the jobs I am using the saw on.I would highly recommend this saw to anyone that needs one.
The item we ordered was shipped the same day we ordered. The chainsaw arrived within two days but the box was broken and the chain bar was missing. We contacted VMInnovations and they shipped a replacment bar the next day. WOW, what service. Thanks.
First hour ran great, started easily. Longer used the more difficult it became to keep idling and start. I had a big job to use it on and the 18" bar made it go much faster but in the end had to drag out the old Stihl to finish because I didnt want to fiddle with carbin and it got real hard to start. I think with some adjustment it will be fine. Shipping from this company is crazy fast.
Anybody buying a "Refurb Unit" will most likely have to adjust the carb as I did. Both Jets. Oiler working good. Very easy assembly. I personally use 6 oz of mix oil to one gal gas. This is about 22:1 I am 62 yrs old ,have been running saws since 16 yrs old and have NEVER lost an engine. I like this saw and intend to keep it in my truck. Not much lost if someone steels it. My other 2 saws ar both Husqvarna's and I simply won't leave either in the truck!
Got this unit as a replacement for an older McCullogh chainsaw that I couldn't get parts for any more. A professional unit this is not. but for the average homeowner that occasionally needs to cut up bushes, trim or fell a tree (smaller size of course) this one would work well. I had to adjust the idle a little to keep it running once it warmed up but was using it within 20 minutes of opening the box. Before I purchased I checked on availability of parts to make sure I could get them and they seem to be widely available. It looks like you have to have a special tool to adjust anything other than the idle speed so I might have to find one of those to really tune it in nicely.
I have a tree cutting service as a side business in WV. AFter my shed was broken into and my last Poulan saw was stolen, I was in desperate need of new saw fast. The stores in the area were not carrying this particular saw. I ordered the saw, and within two days it arrived. Other needing a little tuning, it has worked absolutely as well as the last one I paid triple the price for. The only flaw was the two adjustment screws should have a plastic extender on them, and they were missing. In order to adjust the chain, I have to take part of the saw cover off. I am guessing this was an oversight as it was being refurbished. For the money, it has been a great deal. To date, it has cut down another 12 trees.
The saw is easy to seet up operate and use. It will do the job for light cutting and occasional heavier cuts but lack the power of a better saw. I just retired a 30year old Stihl and the Poulan doesn't compare on power. But it is light weight and will do the job. I sawed up one fairly large tree and had no problems other than had to keep the cut light to prevent stalling the blade. For the price, it's a great deal. For occasional cutting and yard clean-up, it's perfect. If your planning to cut enough wood to to heat your home, get s heavier saw, but this one is ok for a second saw.
Right out of the box, easy to assemble, easy to use. My son cut down a large dead tree just ahead of "Sandy"
